The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India is the sole authority for attesting and apostilling public documents for international use. Before a document can be attested or apostilled by the MEA, it must be authenticated by the appropriate authority in the state from which it originates.
1. Personal Documents:
These include birth certificates, marriage certificates, death certificates, affidavits, and power of attorney. They must be pre-authenticated by the Home Department or General Administrative Department of the respective state.
2. Educational Documents:
Includes degrees, diplomas, HSC, SSLC, and other academic certificates. These must be authenticated by the State Education Department or HRD of the respective state.
3. Commercial Documents:
Includes incorporation certificates, invoices, MoUs, board resolutions, etc. These documents must be pre-authenticated by the concerned Chamber of Commerce.
An Apostille is a special stamp issued by the MEA that certifies the authenticity of a document. India is a member of the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961, and apostilled documents are accepted in 98 member countries (visit www.hcch.net for the latest list).
Common apostilled documents include:
Important: If a document is found to be forged or fake, the MEA has the right to seize the document and take legal action against the applicant. No refunds will be provided under such circumstances.
